Our Story
Empath Actuarial was founded based on a personal journey of the founder, Jennifer Ross, otherwise known as the "Passionate Health Actuary". Throughout her career in healthcare, and as a patient, a mother, and a friend, she has witnessed countless injustices and seen how far too many of the largest corporations in healthcare, create the most harm to people's health. With a passion for change, and a sympathetic recognition for how heavy the problems are in healthcare (people's well-being and lives are on the line), she has a keen ability to find the solutions that work best for your company and the unique challenges of the customers you serve. Our founder's personal journey navigating the unimaginable for herself and her loved ones, led to the establishment of a consultancy firm that fights for you when you need it the most.
Our Founder
Jennifer Ross has dedicated her life, both inside and outside of work, to helping those in need. At the heart of every decision she makes, she asks, "Will this have a positive impact?"
She has held leadership roles in financial forecasting, pricing methodology, provider contracting, and medical economics at some of the largest corporations in consulting, insurance, and pharmacy management. Through her broad range of experiences, and with her sharp analytic insights, she has an acute understanding of what is broken in the healthcare industry... and how to fix it.
Many have asked, "What drives Jennifer to be so passionate about healthcare?" In 2018, Jennifer had a preventable near-death experience that had a profound impact not only on herself and her family, but also on the paths she pursued as a Health Actuary. Through her patient advocacy, she has met many families who had similar, unimaginable experiences. This led her to dive deep into the legal, regulatory, and insurance issues that make these tragic experiences possible.
Many of the affordability initiatives advertised by large healthcare corporations show short-term cost-savings on a subset of claims. When you look at the big picture, these are the same initiatives that negatively impact health and drive up total costs over time. The only initiatives worth pursuing in healthcare are the ones that lower total costs by improving overall health outcomes.
